Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has strengthened the powers of border officials to cancel temporary residence documents, such as study or work permits, at ports of entry. To bolster border security and safeguard the integrity of temporary residence programs, Canada has strengthened its immigration regulations. Updates to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations grant immigration and border officials broader authority to revoke temporary residence documents, including eTAs (electronic travel authorizations) and TRVs (temporary resident visas). Effective January 31, 2025, immigration officers can cancel temporary residence documents, including eTAs, TRVs, work permits, and study permits, under certain conditions.
